Very short DNS TTL
- DNS
- Domain Name System
- TTL
- Time to Live
A TTL below five minutes increases resolver traffic and is rarely needed outside a migration.
What is a DNS TTL?
Time to Live tells recursive DNS resolvers how many seconds they may cache an answer before asking again. Short values speed up planned changes but increase query volume; long values improve caching but make changes take longer to appear.
What to do next
- If no migration is active, raise the TTL to 300–3600 seconds.
- Keep it short only while a planned change is underway.
- Raise it again once the change is stable.
How to verify the fix
Check the authoritative answer and confirm the intended TTL.
When this result may be wrong
A deliberately short TTL can be correct for failover or traffic-management services.
