Conflicting CNAME records
- CNAME
- Canonical Name
A CNAME should not coexist with A, AAAA, MX, TXT or other data at the same DNS name.
What is a CNAME?
A CNAME makes one DNS name an alias of another. DNS rules normally prevent that alias from sharing the same name with address, mail, TXT or other records because the two sources of truth would conflict.
What to do next
- Inspect the records at the exact affected name.
- Keep the CNAME or the other records, not both.
- For an apex domain, use your provider’s supported ALIAS/ANAME feature instead.
How to verify the fix
Query the affected name for every record type after the change.
When this result may be wrong
Some DNS providers flatten an apex CNAME and expose it as address records; that supported behaviour can look like a conflict.
